Electric bikes can give teenagers more independence for getting to school, visiting friends, commuting to a part-time job, or simply riding around the neighborhood. But buying an eBike for a teenager involves more than choosing the right motor, battery, and tire size.
The first question should be: Is this eBike street legal for a teen to ride?

A Class 1 eBike provides assistance only while the rider pedals and stops assisting at 20 mph. This keeps the riding experience relatively close to a conventional bicycle while making hills and longer trips easier.
A Class 2 eBike also has a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph but can use a throttle. That can be convenient when starting from a stop or during short trips, but younger riders need to learn careful throttle control.

Why 20 MPH Can Be Plenty for a Teen Rider
